Life goes on around us, with no respect for our illness. Holidays, family events, social time with friends; how do we squeeze in a life amidst our daily chronic pain?
Here’s a few Life Hacks that may help you:
Do your best to rest leading up to the day of the event. And plan for rest after the event.
Don’t over commit
Don’t plan back-to-back events without allowing time to recuperate. Know your own limitations & don’t do too much at once.
Be rescue ready
Bring your meds, comfort aids or whatever you use to help you cope with your pain. Think of this as your own first aid kit, customized for unique needs.
Ready your “elevator speech”
In business, this is a brief, clear message about you. This can also apply to our chronic illness. Prepare for the questions you know you’ll get when you’re out. Questions like “How are you?” “You don’t look well, what’s wrong”, and other similar questions. You don’t have to give details about your illness, only a brief synopsis; or you don’t need to mention your illness at all. But being prepared with a response, can reduce anxiety about what to say.
With chronic pain, it’s tough to plan for anything. We often live moment-by-moment with our symptoms; but with a little planning, we can have a life!
